HOW TO SMUDGE YOURSELF:
 
Smudging yourself frequently can be very helpful in keeping yourself balanced and maintaining a peaceful state of being. Prior to beginning the smudging ceremony, it may be helpful to meditate to calm your mind and heart. You should also set your intentions, what you want to purge from yourself, and what you want to receive in its space. It may be beneficial to use a candle to light the smudge stick instead of a match because it may take time for the bundle to light. Hold the bundle in the flame until there is a lot of smoke and the stick is burning well. Using your hand, a fan, or a feather, gently fan the smoke onto your body, being mindful to be safe with the smoke and embers. Feather the smoke towards yourself, starting with the top of your head, moving towards both arms, under your arms, then towards your heart and abdomen, and finally completing the feathering of the smoke towards both legs. Carefully raising your left foot, smudge the bottom of your foot, and then do the same to the other foot. For your back, you can step into the smoke and wave the smoke towards it to clear the energy there. Upon completion of the smudging, place your smudge stick on a small plate or burn vessel and allow it to naturally finish smoking. Be sure to safely extinguish any flame or burning embers.

After setting these intentions, it is time to begin at the front door. As this is a ritual of release, it is beneficial to move through your space in a counter-clockwise direction during the smudging. Starting from the top of the space to the bottom, reaching all corners, tracing the frame of each window and doorway, wave your feather or hand in the direction you are needing the smoke to go. When you arrive back at the front door, speak your intention one last time to close the smudging ceremony. Complete this process with your sacred space and feel the energy transform until it feels light. As always, remember to safely extinguish your smudge stick. This can be done annually or more often. It’s especially powerful to perform a space clearing when you first move into a home, or on the lunar new year.
